Despite previous attempts at cracking the PSU market, Taiwan-based Cooler Master is still best known for its chassis and cooling devices.

That, however, may no longer be the case as Cooler Master has announced the world’s first 80 PLUS Silver-Certified high wattage power supply, the UCP 900W (Ultimate Circuit Protection).

It claims the UCP 900W, pictured above, to be the highest rated 80 PLUS PSU to date, achieving no less than 88 per cent efficiency. That makes it the first PSU above 300W to be awarded the 80 PLUS Silver certificate.

According to the 80 PLUS program, a PSU with an efficiency of 80 per cent under full load will obtain a standard certificate. PSUs with full-load efficiency of 82 per cent, 85 per cent and 87 per cent are awarded bronze, silver and gold certificates respectively.

Cooler Master's silver-certified PSU manages an efficiency of 88.14 per cent under 50 per cent load, and 85.10 per cent under full load.

We don't yet have a price or launch date for the UCP 900W, but we'll no doubt be seeing it on show at COMPUTEX next week. In the meantime, the race is now on for manufacturers to create the world's first 80 PLUS Gold Certified high wattage power supply.
