It's cool, it's quiet, and boy is it big!

Cooler Master has launched its Hyper Z600 passive cooling solution and with it, denounces both noise pollution and power consumption.

The cooler, measuring a mammoth 127.28 x 127.28 x 160 mm, weighs 1045g and promises to passively cool any CPU drawing up to 89 watts. Though that conveniently rules out most of today's 90 watt quad-core chips, Cooler Master states that the Z600 is ideal for CPUs such as Intel's dual-core E8500 and AMD's 5600+.

The Z600, pictured above (dandelion not included, sorry) features interlaced aluminium fins to maximise the dissipation surface and provide superior cooling performance. There are six heat pipes, connected to a mirror-coated copper base to maximise conduction, and Cooler Master claims the unique “X” design creates lower back pressure to make air pass through the heatsink quickly.

It's compatible with Intel's Socket 775 and AMD's Socket 940, AM2 and AM2+. What the above picture doesn't make clear, however, is the sheer size of this thing. To put it into perspective, here it is attached to a motherboard and, bigger still, with two optional 120mm fans attached.

It's a monster alright, particularly when paired with a couple of fans. Expect the Z600 to start showing up at all the usual retailers for around £34.99.

ifx-14 and true can run passive :) iirc on anandtech reviews they could run passive on a qx6800 while still keeping the cpu cooler than the intel stock hsf.Quote

Its... A WIN.... OMFG passive quad core overclocking ftw! at awsome temps!!!Quote

I dont see why people make such a big fuss over fanless coolers, if you get a Big Typ120VX then stick it on low fan speed you cannot hear the thing at all (ear right next to it with nothing else in the room and I have a fanless PSU). Seems a fair bit cheaper and less heavy so shouldnt damage the motherboard....Quote

I agreee but as you know, each to their own :) I wouldn't want that 1kg+ heavyweight on my mobo unless it was horizontal. Ideal for a HTPC I suppose.Quote

Thanks for those links Dr Cool.
It does look very impressive, but I too would be very reluctant to have a 1kg heatsink in the PC.

Not to turn the topic away, but I did notice that Cooljag Falcon 92-Cu Heatsink, and it looked very promising, until I read a review on it. The noise level for the low setting on the fan was quite high, and considering the Artic Cooling fan on the Freezer pro does 20 odd dB on 1200 it isn't an entirely convincing fan. However, with that said, it does perform well and you could always replace the fan yourself (it looks like you could put a 92mm in there) or just make sure its always on low.Quote
