Centrino moving up a notch to ease confusion?

You really have to be in the know to understand Intel's codenames and brand names. The manufacturer's recent mobile chipsets, Carmel, Sonoma, Napa and most recently, Santa Rosa, have all been branded as Centrino.

For your average consumer, those codenames don't mean much and one Centrino chipset seems the same as any other.

Thankfully, DigiTimes is reporting that Intel is moving to ease confusion by labelling its fifth generation notebook platform, Montevina, as Centrino 2. That sounds much better, anybody can tell from a glance that Centrino 2 is better than Centrino. Good thinking Intel.

Montevina is scheduled for a mid-2008 release and will provide 45nm Core 2 Duo notebook CPUs, featuring a 1066MHz FSB, 6MB of L2 cache, DDR3 memory, WiMAX and core speeds between 2.26GHz and 3.06GHz.

The introduction of Centrino 2 hasn't been confirmed by Intel just yet, but we'd expect an official announcement sooner rather than later.
