$1.25 million in scholarships up for grabs

The 2008 Intel Science Talent Search is well underway in America, with 300 seniors being names as semifinalists.

The competition, referred to by some as the "junior Nobel Prize", aims to award America's brightest young scientific minds as they compete for $1.25 million in scholarships.

The 300 chosen semifinalists each receive $1,000 and an additional $1,000 is awarded to their school. Later this month, just 40 of the 300 semifinalists will be named as finalists and they'll be heading to Washington D.C. for a week-long event in March where the winner of the grand price, a $100,000 scholarship, will be announced at a black-tie banquet on March 11th.

The competition has seen six former finalists go on to win the Nobel Prize among other prestigious academic awards.

Intel Foundation President and Director of Education, Brenda Musill, said "This year marks Intel's 10th year of sponsorship of this historic competition, and we are honoured to be a part of a program that is fostering the talent of America's brightest young minds."

"These students are solving difficult problems that will have a real impact on generations to come."
