Near full charge in less than 5 minutes? Yes please!

It has been a long time coming but Toshiba have finally announced the next big thing in battery power. It's called an SCiB, Super Charge ion Battery for those wondering, and this little beauty will charge to 90% of its full capacity in under 5 minutes. Furthermore, Toshiba claim the battery will still be going strong after 10 years and may see a capacity decrease of only 10% after 3000 charges.

Sounds good doesn't it? It's not too far away either, Toshiba plan mass production from March 2008 but unfortunately will be focusing on industrial fields to begin with. SCiB batteries look set to show up in hybrid vehicles first but we hope, we really really hope, they'll make an appearance in smaller peripherals shortly after.

Toshiba SCiB

Just imagine, a laptop battery that doesn't explode and a mobile phone that charges in under 5 minutes. Oh the possibilities, please let us have them Toshiba!

No i don't take everything litteraly (although perhaps i do more than most) but there is no way that quote could be read as you meant it :)

Volume of SCiB = 76570mm/cubed
Volume of a standard 2.4v LiIon (http://docs-europe.electrocomponents.com/webdocs/0380/0900766b8038098e.pdf) = 26950mm/cubed

4200/76570 = 0.0549mA per cubic mm
800/26950 = 0.0297mA per cubic mm

So alhough not conclusive, it looks like the power density is a lot better with these new batteries :)

:surprised:

This is looking even better now!Quote
Re: Toshiba's SCiB batteries landing in March
Just remember, that is a standard LiIon battery and used in some pretty old mobile phones. Newer phones probably use denser cells.Quote
Re: Toshiba's SCiB batteries landing in March
This'll be fine but how well does it respond to overcharging? Many gadgets on the market can suffer if you leave them plugged in for charge for too long.Quote

Sounds great. :)Quote
