Gigabyte M704, quite the eye catcher

Though it's fair to say that the UMPC platform hasn't quite taken the world by storm, it's not due to a lack of trying we're sure. With the majority of UMPC manufacturers deploying updated revisions, Gigabyte reveal a new portable of their own in the form of the M704. It's quite the looker too.

Gigabyte M704

The M704 offers a 7" LED backlit screen with a resolution of 1,024x600 and a slide-out keyboard. At just 190x120x30.3mm in size and weighing in at 780g, the Gigabyte M704 does a grand job of packing features into a small case. The full specification is as follows:

  • CPU: VIA Esther ULV C7-M (1.2GHz, 400/800MHz, 128KB/128KB L2)
  • OS: Windows Vista Premium
  • Chipset: VIA VX-700
  • Memory: DDR2-533, 768MB
  • LCD: 7” TFT-LCD WXGA, 1,024x600, with LED backlight
  • HDD: 1.8" with 5400 RPM,40 or 60 GB
  • CAM: 1.3M pixel CMOS web-cam
  • Wireless: 802.11 b/g
  • Card reader:SD/MMC/SD-IO
  • USB 2.0: 2 ports
  • VGA output
  • DC in connector
  • Stylus

We don't yet know when we'll see the M704 reach the marketplace and more importantly, we don't know how much it'll cost. With most UMPCs priced at around the same mark as a fully featured notebooks, it has proven difficult for many to justify sacrificing usability for the sake of portability alone.
